How one distance is restated through the meter
Length conversion changes the unit used to describe one physical distance. This page uses the defined international inch and foot, with the meter as a shared basis for every offered pair.
A conversion preserves distance while changing the counting unit. One international mile contains exactly 1,609.344 meters, so it is 1.609344 kilometers. The same meter basis also relates inches, feet and yards to metric units without repeatedly rounding through intermediate units.
A ruler-style distance journey passes through meters, using defined international lengths. It prints the pair factor so the direction and size of the conversion can be checked.
How the amount, unit pair and feet-and-inches entries affect results
Each conversion multiplies by a source factor in meters and divides by a destination factor. The common errors happen before that, when a measurement is typed into the single amount box.
- Amount to convert
- One nonnegative distance in a single unit, up to one trillion. There are no separate feet and inches boxes, so 5 ft 10 in must be entered as 70 inches, which gives 177.8 cm. Typing 5.10 feet means five and one-tenth feet, or 155.448 cm, more than 22 cm short.
- Inches, feet, yards and miles
- These use the international definitions of 0.0254 m, 0.3048 m, 0.9144 m and 1,609.344 m, so twelve inches make a foot exactly; 100 m is 109.3613298338 yd. The 1,852 m nautical mile is not a length option here. It appears only inside the knot on the Speed Converter.
- Metric units
- Millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers sit at powers of ten, so a metric-to-metric result only moves the decimal point. The usual slip is choosing centimeters for a drawing dimensioned in millimeters, which makes every converted figure ten times too large or too small.
- Display precision
- Results show up to ten decimal places and the pair factor up to twelve. A nonzero result that would round to zero at ten places switches to scientific notation instead, so 0.000001 mm in miles reads 6.213712e-13. Round the answer yourself to the precision of the original measurement.
Steps
- Type a nonnegative distance.
- Choose the original unit and desired unit from the lists.
- Use the meter step and one-unit factor to check why the numerical answer increases or decreases.
Reading tip: The ruler marks represent the source length and the same length in destination units; the middle checkpoint shows the meter amount used in the calculation.
Measurements that call for a defined-length conversion
Compare road distances
Convert an international-mile journey into kilometers for a metric route summary.
Read a dimensioned plan
Translate a length stated in feet or inches to meters before comparing drawings.
Check a product size
Move a centimeter or millimeter dimension into a requested larger length unit.
Verify an instruction
Use the printed source-to-target factor to check the direction of a stated distance conversion.
How the calculation works
- source amount
- The nonnegative distance entered in the unit chosen in the first list.
- source factor
- Defined number of meters in one selected source length unit.
- destination factor
- Defined number of meters in one selected destination length unit.
- international foot
- Exactly 0.3048 meter here, distinct from the former U.S. survey-foot convention.
The factor describes unit definitions; the accuracy of a measured distance depends on the original measurement.
What every part means
- source amount
- The nonnegative distance entered in the unit chosen in the first list.
- source factor
- Defined number of meters in one selected source length unit.
- destination factor
- Defined number of meters in one selected destination length unit.
- international foot
- Exactly 0.3048 meter here, distinct from the former U.S. survey-foot convention.
Calculate it step by step
For an international mile, multiply by 1,609.344.
For kilometers, divide the meter total by 1,000.
This factor can be reused for another amount using the same unit pair.
Defined factors are held as decimal strings. The international inch is exactly 0.0254 meter, making its foot 0.3048 meter and mile 1,609.344 meters under the chosen convention.

Interpretation & limitations
How to read your result
A larger destination unit needs fewer units to describe the same distance. The displayed one-unit factor lets you check a larger input by simple multiplication.
Where this estimate stops
Older U.S. land surveying may specify a survey foot that differs slightly from the international foot. This calculator does not interpret coordinate systems, maps or measurement uncertainty.
Frequently asked questions
01Is an international foot exactly 0.3048 meters?
Yes. That is the defined international foot used here. Historical U.S. survey-foot records use a slightly different length and need their own convention.
02Does converting miles to kilometers change the journey?
No. It changes only the number and unit used to represent the same distance; one international mile is 1.609344 kilometers.
03Why can a result need many decimals?
A defined conversion can be exact even when its decimal display is long; the result display rounds for readability while retaining precision during calculation.
04What is the difference between a meter and a square meter?
A meter measures a line. A square meter measures a surface; use Area Converter when both length dimensions change.
05Can I convert the same unit to itself?
Yes. Its source and destination meter factors cancel, leaving the entered amount.
06Is an inch exactly 2.54 centimeters?
Yes under the international definition used here: 0.0254 meter equals 2.54 centimeters.
