When net wealth passes nisab and what 2.5% applies to
This estimate organizes the values a visitor has already classified as zakatable, subtracts the debts they consider deductible and compares the net with their chosen nisab. It then applies the stated 2.5% method when the visitor says the lunar-year anniversary has arrived. It cannot decide religious eligibility, asset classification or a current nisab price.
The ledger first shows each entered asset group, then the debt subtraction, net value, threshold and estimated amount. Keeping asset categories separate helps visitors check whether a number was omitted or counted twice. The calculator does not classify a shareholding, pension, jewellery item or business stock for you; those judgments remain with the method you follow.
The asset-to-net ledger keeps your chosen values, debt deduction, nisab and anniversary test visible before the 2.5% arithmetic. It does not hide a live metal price or claim to decide religious eligibility for you.
How assets, deductible debts, nisab and the anniversary decide zakat
Four asset fields add up, one debt field subtracts, and two conditions decide whether 2.5% of the net applies at all.
- Asset values
- Cash, metal value, business or investment value and receivables are simply added, so each 1,000 entered adds 25 to the estimate once both conditions are met. Enter the metal's value in your currency, not its weight in grams or tola. Counting the same money as both cash and business stock is the usual double entry.
- Deductible debts
- Debts reduce net wealth one for one, and net wealth stops at zero. Adding 1,000 of debt to the example lowers net wealth from 15,000 to 14,000 and zakat from 375 to 350. Which debts qualify, such as whether only amounts currently due count, is decided by the method you follow.
- Nisab threshold
- Nisab is a pass-or-fail test, not a deduction, so the estimate has a cliff at it: with a nisab of 5,000, net wealth of exactly 5,000 gives 125, while 4,999.99 gives 0. A silver-based nisab is far lower than a gold-based one, so the basis you choose can decide whether anything is due.
- Anniversary condition
- Choosing No returns zero however large the wealth, because the estimate is only made once your zakat year is complete. The tool does not track dates itself. Choose Yes on the anniversary and value every asset and debt as of that day.
Steps
- Enter eligible asset values in one currency, separating cash, precious metals, business or investment value, and expected receivables.
- Enter only debts your chosen guidance allows you to deduct, plus a current nisab threshold obtained from a source you trust.
- Choose whether your zakat anniversary has arrived, then read the asset-to-net ledger and the conditional 2.5% estimate.
Reading tip: Use values from one valuation date and one currency. If you change the nisab or deductible-debt interpretation, rerun the same asset entries and compare the difference. A zero estimate here means only that your entered threshold or anniversary condition was not met in this simplified model.
Yearly zakat preparation this ledger supports
Organize a yearly valuation
Group cash, metals, business value and receivables on the date used by your chosen method.
Review a debt deduction
Compare the net result before and after entering a debt you have confirmed is deductible.
Check a chosen nisab
Use a current threshold from your trusted source and see whether entered net wealth meets it.
Prepare a discussion
Take the itemized ledger to a qualified adviser when asset or liability treatment is unclear.
How the calculation works
- G
- Gross of the four asset groups entered in the same currency.
- N
- Nonnegative net after subtracting only debts the visitor marked deductible.
- nisab
- User-entered threshold from a trusted current source, in the same currency.
- 0.025 / Z
- The cited 2.5% rate as a decimal / conditional arithmetic estimate.
Nisab tests the threshold; subtracting nisab before applying 2.5% would use a different method. The tool does not decide asset or debt eligibility.
What every part means
Calculate it step by step
These categories are supplied by you; the calculator does not decide whether an item is zakatable.
The subtraction stops at zero so liabilities above assets do not create negative zakat.
The threshold gates the calculation; it is not subtracted before applying 2.5%.
Islamic Relief Worldwide describes a 2.5% annual calculation on net zakatable wealth at or above nisab, considering zakatable assets and eligible liabilities. This site's interface requires visitors to supply the nisab and debt interpretation themselves. We calculate with decimal arithmetic and normally round the displayed amount to two decimals, retaining significant digits for tiny nonzero values.

- Has your zakat anniversary arrived?
- Yes
Cash 10,000 + metals 2,000 + business 5,000 + receivables 1,000 = 18,000 gross. Less 3,000 chosen debts = 15,000 net. With nisab 5,000 and anniversary yes: 15,000 × 0.025 = 375.

Interpretation & limitations
How to read your result
The estimate is denominated in the currency of your entries. Read the threshold status before the amount: a below-threshold or not-yet-anniversary entry returns zero under this selected method, not a ruling that no payment could ever apply.
Where this estimate stops
Nisab metal basis and market price change. Treatment of assets, investments, receivables, debts and the lunar-year anniversary can differ among authorities and individual circumstances. This page does not determine obligation, automate metal prices or replace qualified religious or financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
01Does the calculator fetch today's nisab?
No. Nisab depends on a chosen metal basis and current prices. You enter the threshold in the same currency as your assets.
02Does it calculate 2.5% only on wealth above nisab?
No. Under the stated method, nisab is a threshold test. When met, 2.5% is applied to the full entered net zakatable amount.
03Can I mix rupees and dollars?
No. Convert each asset and debt to one currency at a rate you have chosen before entering values. The calculator does not fetch foreign-exchange rates.
04What if my debts exceed the assets I entered?
Net wealth is floored at zero, and this simplified calculation returns zero. Verify that every debt entered is actually deductible under your guidance.
05Why isn't nisab subtracted from net wealth?
In the cited method nisab is the eligibility threshold. When that condition is met, the 2.5% arithmetic applies to the full net zakatable amount.
06Can this tool determine which shares or jewellery count?
No. Enter only values you have classified under a method you trust. Asset classification and valuation are outside this arithmetic tool.

- Zakat on Gold and Silver: Nisab in Grams and Tola ExplainedThe nisab is 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, which is 7.5 tola and 52.5 tola. Whether your jewellery passes the gold test can depend on one detail: whether you weigh the piece or only the pure gold in it.
- Gold or Silver Nisab: How the Choice Changes Whether Zakat Is DueThe silver nisab is roughly a twelfth of the gold nisab at typical prices, so anyone whose net wealth falls between the two owes 2.5% under one and nothing under the other. Which one applies to you is a ruling for your scholar.
