How surface units scale by the square of a length factor
Area measures a surface, so a change in linear unit affects both dimensions. A square-foot factor is the square of the international-foot length factor, and an international acre is 43,560 of those square feet.
Area factors must account for two dimensions. An international foot is 0.3048 meter, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 square meter. One international acre is exactly 43,560 international square feet, or 4,046.8564224 square meters.
Square tiles signal that two dimensions are involved, and the basis explicitly distinguishes international-foot acres from legacy survey records.
How the area entered, metric units and international acres combine
This converter takes an area that has already been measured or calculated. These notes cover entering it correctly and the factors behind each unit family.
- Amount to convert
- A finished area, not a pair of dimensions, from zero to one trillion. Multiply length by width first: a 30 ft by 40 ft room is 1,200 ft², or 111.483648 m². Converting both sides to meters and then multiplying gives the same result; converting only one side does not.
- Square feet and square meters
- One square meter is 10.7639104167 ft², not 3.28, because the length factor is squared. Using the length factor for an area understates square feet by about 70%: 10 m² is 107.6391041671 ft², not 32.8. The same trap applies to square inches and square miles.
- Hectares and square kilometers
- These metric land units are exact powers of ten: a hectare is 10,000 m² and a square kilometer is 100 hectares. One hectare is 2.4710538147 acres, a factor often shortened to 2.47 in listings, so check which rounding a document used before comparing two parcels.
- Acres and square miles
- Both use the international foot: an acre is 4,046.8564224 m² and a square mile is exactly 640 acres. Older US land records based on the survey foot differ very slightly. Marla, kanal and square yards are not in this list, because the marla itself varies by region.
- Display precision
- Results show up to ten decimal places, which can leave very few significant digits when a tiny area is put into a large unit: 1 in² displays as 0.0000000002 mi². Choose a closer destination unit, such as square feet, when the figure is that small.
Steps
- Enter a nonnegative surface area and choose the unit shown on the plan or listing.
- Choose the target unit, noting that acres use the international foot here.
- Review the square-meter basis before using a rounded result for property records.
Reading tip: The tiled square is a surface cue, not a map boundary. The numeric basis below it shows the selected land or room area as square meters before target conversion.

How the calculation works
- source area
- The entered two-dimensional amount, such as one international acre.
- m²
- Square-meter common basis for room and land area units.
- ft²
- Square international foot, formed by squaring the 0.3048 meter foot factor.
- international acre
- Exactly 43,560 international square feet or 4,046.8564224 square meters.
Legal land records can use survey-foot definitions or mapped areas. Confirm those conventions separately.
What every part means
- source area
- The entered two-dimensional amount, such as one international acre.
- m²
- Square-meter common basis for room and land area units.
- ft²
- Square international foot, formed by squaring the 0.3048 meter foot factor.
- international acre
- Exactly 43,560 international square feet or 4,046.8564224 square meters.
Calculate it step by step
Both width and height change when square units are converted.
An international acre uses 4,046.8564224 m².
Dividing one acre's square meters by one square foot's area gives 43,560.
The converter stores exact defined area factors for the listed metric and international customary units. It uses decimal arithmetic so repeated conversion through a rounded intermediate measurement is unnecessary.

Interpretation & limitations
How to read your result
The number of square feet is much larger than the number of acres for the same parcel because each acre contains many small square-foot tiles. Use a local survey or official record for legal boundaries.
Where this estimate stops
An international-foot acre may differ slightly from legacy U.S. survey-foot-based records. This converter does not calculate area from a shape or account for geodetic projections, slope or measurement tolerance.
Frequently asked questions
01Why isn't 1 square foot 0.3048 square meters?
A square foot covers one foot along each of two sides. Square 0.3048 to get 0.09290304 square meters.
02Are all acres exactly the same?
This tool defines an acre as 43,560 international square feet. Older U.S. land records can use survey-foot-based areas, so check the record's convention.
03Why is one acre 43,560 square feet?
That is the acre definition used here. Multiplying 43,560 by 0.09290304 m² per international square foot gives 4,046.8564224 m².
04Can I convert room dimensions directly?
First multiply measured length by width using matching linear units to obtain an area, then convert that area with this tool.
05Are hectares metric?
Yes. One hectare is exactly 10,000 square meters; one square kilometer is 100 hectares.
06Does a square mile equal one mile?
No. A square mile measures a two-dimensional region and equals 2,589,988.110336 square meters under the international-mile definition.
07Can I convert marlas, kanals or square yards here?
No. Those units are on the Marla & Kanal Converter, which also asks which marla size your record uses, since a marla can be 225, 270, 272 or 272.25 sq ft. Convert to square feet there, then bring the square-foot figure here if you need hectares or square miles.
