THE BASICS

How fixed-length time units convert through seconds

A duration states how much time elapses. This converter uses exact fixed-size units: a minute has 60 seconds, an hour 3,600, a day 86,400 and a week seven such days.

Elapsed durations can be scaled through seconds exactly when their unit length is fixed. Two hours are 7,200 seconds or 120 minutes. A day in this converter is 86,400 elapsed seconds; it is not an instruction to advance a local wall clock by one calendar date.

A duration ladder makes the fixed-seconds basis visible, with exact day and week definitions and a clear route to the separate timestamp-duration calculator.

YOUR INPUTS

How the duration, decimal hours and fixed-day units are read

Input and output are both decimal amounts of a single unit. Mixing that with clock notation, such as 1:30, is the main source of wrong answers.

Amount to convert
One nonnegative duration in a single unit. There are no hours-and-minutes boxes, so 1 hour 30 minutes goes in as 90 minutes or 1.5 hours. Typing 1.30 hours means 1.3 hours, which converts to 78 minutes, not 90.
Decimal output
Results are decimal fractions of the destination unit, not clock time. 100 minutes shows 1.6666666667 hours; the fractional part is two-thirds of an hour, or 40 minutes, so the clock form is 1:40. Likewise 1.25 hours is 75 minutes, not 1 hour 25 minutes.
Days and weeks
The day option is exactly 86,400 seconds and the week 604,800, so a week is 168 hours. A 365-day count converts to 52.1428571429 weeks. That is a fixed-length figure, not the number of calendar weeks between two dates, which the Date Difference Calculator can count.
Milliseconds
The smallest unit is one-thousandth of a second, common in timing logs and media data. Converting it into a large unit leaves few significant digits at the ten-decimal display: 1 ms shows as 0.0000000017 weeks. Pick seconds or minutes as the destination when precision matters.

Steps

  1. Enter the nonnegative elapsed duration.
  2. Choose the unit it is currently expressed in and the fixed unit you want.
  3. Use the seconds step to check the converted amount; use Time Duration for two actual timestamps.

Reading tip: The duration ladder shows the input, seconds basis and destination. The day and week rungs are explicitly fixed-size elapsed intervals.

PRACTICAL USES

Durations that convert cleanly with fixed-length units

01

Estimate task duration

Express a stated number of hours as minutes for a timer or work log.

02

Normalize a measurement

Convert milliseconds to seconds before comparing recorded elapsed intervals.

03

Review fixed-day totals

Translate exact 24-hour days into hours or seconds when calendar dates are irrelevant.

04

Avoid month guesses

Recognize that variable calendar months require dates rather than one fixed multiplier.

THE METHOD

How the calculation works

FormulaAt a glance
Converted elapsed duration=Source duration ×Seconds per source unitSeconds per destination unit
Where:
source duration
A nonnegative elapsed interval, such as two hours, rather than a calendar timestamp.
seconds
Common fixed-duration basis used for every supported unit pair.
fixed day
Exactly 24 elapsed hours, independent of local daylight-saving clock changes.
fixed week
Seven fixed days, totaling 604,800 elapsed seconds.
COMPLETE FORMULA & VARIATIONS
Elapsed seconds = source amount × seconds/source unit
Target duration = elapsed seconds / seconds/destination unit
1 fixed day = 86,400 seconds; 1 fixed week = 604,800 seconds

Months and years have no single fixed number of seconds; use date-aware tools when calendar boundaries matter.

What every part means

source duration
A nonnegative elapsed interval, such as two hours, rather than a calendar timestamp.
seconds
Common fixed-duration basis used for every supported unit pair.
fixed day
Exactly 24 elapsed hours, independent of local daylight-saving clock changes.
fixed week
Seven fixed days, totaling 604,800 elapsed seconds.

Calculate it step by step

1. Common duration
Elapsed seconds = source amount × seconds per source unit

Two hours become 2 × 3,600 = 7,200 seconds.

2. New unit
Target amount = elapsed seconds ÷ seconds per target unit

7,200 seconds divided by 60 seconds per minute gives 120 minutes.

3. Fixed week
1 week = 7 × 24 × 60 × 60 = 604,800 seconds

The week option always contains seven fixed 24-hour days.

The tool stores fixed second factors for milliseconds, seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks. It rejects calendar months and years because they have variable lengths.

Interpretation & limitations

How to read your result

When the destination unit is shorter, its numeric count grows. Use the separate Time Duration calculator to subtract two UTC timestamps; use Date Arithmetic to move along a calendar.

Where this estimate stops

Local civil days may have daylight-saving transitions and variable elapsed hours. Leap seconds, time zones, months, years and scheduling deadlines are outside this fixed-duration converter.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

01Can I convert months or years here?

No. Calendar months and years vary in day count. A fixed factor would silently assume a convention that may be wrong for the dates you mean.

02What about a daylight-saving day?

The day option here always means exactly 24 elapsed hours. A local calendar day across a clock change can have a different elapsed duration.

03Why is a day always 24 hours here?

This page defines a day as a fixed elapsed duration of 86,400 seconds. A named local calendar day can differ during clock changes.

04Can I convert 1.5 hours to minutes?

Yes. Multiplying 1.5 by 60 gives exactly 90 minutes.

05Why are months absent?

Months have different numbers of days. A single fixed multiplier would give a misleading answer without a date or an explicit convention.

06How is this different from Time Duration?

This converts one entered interval between units. Time Duration finds the interval between two complete UTC date-and-time inputs.
