THE BASICS

How kilograms connect metric and avoirdupois mass units

Everyday 'weight' labels often mean mass. This converter expresses the listed metric and avoirdupois mass units on a kilogram basis; it does not infer force or special ounce systems.

The label 'weight' is conventional in shopping and shipping, but the units here quantify mass. One international avoirdupois pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilogram. An ordinary ounce is one sixteenth of that pound, not the troy ounce associated with precious metals.

A balance-style view compares two mass labels around the kilogram basis, with ordinary avoirdupois ounces explicitly distinguished from troy ounces.

YOUR INPUTS

How the mass entered, ounce type and ton choice change results

The arithmetic is a single kilogram factor each way. The decisions that matter are which ounce and which ton your figure uses, and whether a two-unit reading was combined correctly.

Amount to convert
The mass from a label, scale or shipping record, from zero to one trillion in one unit. The answer moves in direct proportion. A pounds-and-ounces reading must be combined first: 7 lb 4 oz is 116 oz or 7.25 lb, not 7.4 lb, because there are sixteen ounces in a pound.
Ounce (avoirdupois)
This ounce is 28.349523125 g, so 10 oz is 283.49523125 g. Gold, silver and other precious metals are priced per troy ounce of 31.1034768 g, which is not listed. Entering a troy figure as an ordinary ounce understates the metal by roughly 9%; multiply troy ounces by 31.1034768 and enter grams instead.
Metric tonne
The t option is exactly 1,000 kg, or 2,204.6226218488 lb. A US short ton of 2,000 lb is only 907.18474 kg, and a British long ton of 2,240 lb is heavier than either. Confirm which system a freight figure labelled simply ton uses before entering it here.
Pound-to-kilogram factor
Every pair passes through the kilogram, with the pound fixed at 0.45359237 kg, so 1 kg is 2.2046226218 lb. The mental shortcut of 2.2 is about 0.2% low, which is negligible for a parcel but amounts to roughly 4.6 lb on a one-tonne load.
Display precision
Results show up to ten decimal places with trailing zeros dropped, so 1 mg in tonnes prints 0.000000001. A nonzero result too small for ten places switches to scientific notation rather than showing 0. Round the final figure to the scale's own resolution.

Steps

  1. Enter the mass stated on a label or measurement.
  2. Select its source unit, then the unit required by your recipe, shipment or record.
  3. Check the kilogram basis and the exact defined pound factor before rounding for your application.

Reading tip: The balance illustration puts the source and destination labels on opposite sides and shows their common kilogram mass in the center; both readings refer to the same quantity.

PRACTICAL USES

Labels and shipments where a mass conversion helps

01

Convert a parcel mass

Translate a pound label to kilograms before applying a carrier's separate billing rules.

02

Scale an ingredient

Convert grams and ordinary avoirdupois ounces while checking which ounce system is meant.

03

Compare product labels

Put two package masses into one unit before comparing their quantities.

04

Check a metric shipment

Express a metric-tonne quantity as kilograms without confusing it with a US short ton.

THE METHOD

How the calculation works

FormulaAt a glance
Converted mass=Source mass ×Kilograms per source unitKilograms per destination unit
Where:
source mass
The entered nonnegative mass, commonly called weight on labels.
kilogram
Shared mass unit used before dividing by the requested target-unit factor.
avoirdupois
Ordinary pound-and-ounce system; it differs from troy ounces for precious metals.
metric tonne
Exactly 1,000 kilograms, different from a U.S. short ton.
COMPLETE FORMULA & VARIATIONS
Mass in kilograms = source amount × kg/source unit
Target mass = kilograms / kg/destination unit
1 avoirdupois lb = 0.45359237 kg; 1 oz = 1 lb / 16

The page converts mass units only and does not estimate force, shipping dimensional weight or measurement error.

What every part means

source mass
The entered nonnegative mass, commonly called weight on labels.
kilogram
Shared mass unit used before dividing by the requested target-unit factor.
avoirdupois
Ordinary pound-and-ounce system; it differs from troy ounces for precious metals.
metric tonne
Exactly 1,000 kilograms, different from a U.S. short ton.

Calculate it step by step

1. Mass basis
Kilograms = source amount × kilograms per source unit

A pound uses 0.45359237 kilogram; a gram uses 0.001 kilogram.

2. Target count
Target amount = kilograms ÷ kilograms per target unit

The physical mass stays fixed while the number of units changes.

3. Ounce relationship
1 avoirdupois ounce = 1 pound ÷ 16 = 0.028349523125 kg

This specifies the ounce system rather than treating every ounce symbol as interchangeable.

The tool converts through a kilogram basis with decimal arithmetic. Metric tonne means 1,000 kilograms; the pound and ounce factors use the ordinary international avoirdupois definitions.

Interpretation & limitations

How to read your result

A one-pound parcel becomes 0.45359237 kg before any carrier-specific rounding. For nutrition, medicine or laboratory work, keep the unit definition and required precision visible.

Where this estimate stops

The tool does not calculate gravitational force, body-composition measures, dosage, carrier dimensional weight or troy-ounce metal pricing. Measurement accuracy remains limited by the original scale.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

01What kind of ounce is included?

The ounce here is the ordinary avoirdupois ounce, one sixteenth of an avoirdupois pound. A troy ounce used for precious metals is different.

02Can I use this for shipping weight?

It converts the mass figure you enter. A carrier may round upward, use dimensional weight or apply its own billing rules afterward.

03Is a metric tonne the same as a US short ton?

No. The metric tonne option is exactly 1,000 kilograms; a US short ton is a different unit and is not offered here.

04Why does one pound become less than one kilogram?

A kilogram is a larger mass unit, so fewer kilograms describe the same one-pound mass.

05Can I convert grams to milligrams?

Yes. One gram is exactly 1,000 milligrams, using the kilogram factors in the unit list.

06Does conversion improve the original measurement?

No. Decimal precision in the defined factor cannot add significant digits that the measuring device never supplied.

07How do I convert stones to kilograms?

Stone is not one of the listed units. One stone is 14 avoirdupois pounds, so multiply stones by 14, add any extra pounds and enter the total in pounds: 10 st 3 lb is 143 lb. One stone alone, 14 lb, converts to 6.35029318 kg.
