THE BASICS

How the watering method sets the share of a harvest due

Ushr is the zakat due on crops. Sahih al-Bukhari 1483 sets one-tenth on land watered by rain, springs or natural channels, and half of that, one-twentieth, on land watered by lifting water. This calculator takes your harvest, applies the rate for how the land was watered, checks it against any minimum you choose, and shows the ushr in kilograms and in rupees.

Ushr is worked out on the harvest itself. The rate depends only on how the land was watered: one-tenth where rain, springs or natural channels water it, and one-twentieth where water is lifted or bought, as with a well or tubewell. In the Hanafi view, ushr is due on any amount and on the gross harvest, without taking out the cost of seed, labour, fertiliser or tractor; transport and packing after harvest may be deducted. Other schools apply a minimum of five wasqs. The calculator applies the chosen rate to the gross harvest and values it at your price.

Twenty sacks show the harvest, with the one or two that are ushr highlighted, next to the kilograms and value due.

YOUR INPUTS

Harvest weight, watering, minimum and price: what each changes

The harvest, the watering choice and the minimum decide the kilograms due. The price converts that quantity to rupees and does nothing else.

Harvested produce
Enter the gross weight of one crop's harvest before seed, fertiliser or labour costs are taken out. Ushr is a fixed share of that weight, so 2,000 kg from tubewell-watered land owes 100 kg. Netting off costs before entering the weight would contradict the gross-harvest method the calculator applies.
Watering method
Natural watering by rain, springs or flow takes one-tenth; a tubewell, well or other paid watering takes one-twentieth. The choice doubles or halves the result: the example's 100 kg becomes 200 kg, worth Rs 20,000, on rain-fed land. Mixed watering is not split, so ask your scholar which rate applies.
Minimum harvest
Enter 948 kg for the five-wasq figure in Pakistan's law, another estimate your scholar uses, or 0 for the Hanafi view of no minimum. A 900 kg harvest owes nothing against 948 kg but 45 kg against 0. A harvest exactly at the minimum is charged, and the rate then applies to the whole crop, not just the excess.
Market price per kg
The price changes only the cash value, never the kilograms due. At Rs 100 per kg the example's 100 kg is worth Rs 10,000, and entering 0 still shows 100 kg with no value. Use a current local selling price for the same crop and grade.

Steps

  1. Enter the harvest in kilograms and the market price per kilogram.
  2. Choose how the land was watered: naturally (10%) or with cost such as a tubewell (5%).
  3. Enter the minimum harvest your scholar applies, or 0 for none, then calculate.

Reading tip: Weigh or estimate the whole harvest of each crop. If your land uses both kinds of watering in a season, ask your scholar which rate applies; the calculator does not split the rate.

PRACTICAL USES

Harvest-time decisions an ushr figure supports

01

Settle ushr at harvest

Work out the kilograms due from each crop as soon as it is weighed.

02

Compare watering methods

See how ushr differs between rain-fed and tubewell-watered fields.

03

Pay in cash

Convert the ushr in kilograms to rupees at the current market price.

04

Apply your scholar's minimum

Check a harvest against 948 kg, another estimate of five wasqs, or no minimum.

THE METHOD

How the calculation works

FormulaAt a glance
Ushr due=harvest × (10% natural or 5% with cost)
Where:
harvest
The gross produce in kilograms, before cultivation costs are taken out.
r
One-tenth or one-twentieth, decided by how the land was watered (Bukhari 1483).
minimum
Optional threshold such as 948 kg; zero for the Hanafi view of no minimum.
price per kg
Your market price, used only to show the value of the ushr in rupees.
COMPLETE FORMULA & VARIATIONS
r = 10% (rain, springs, natural flow) or 5% (well, tubewell, paid water)
Ushr = 0 if harvest < minimum; otherwise harvest × r
Value = ushr (kg) × price per kg

Scholars differ on the minimum, costs and mixed irrigation; the calculator applies the options you choose.

What every part means

Calculate it step by step

1. Choose the rate
r = 10% for natural watering; r = 5% for watering with cost

From Sahih al-Bukhari 1483.

2. Check the minimum
If harvest < minimum, ushr = 0

Enter 0 for no minimum, as in the Hanafi view.

3. Ushr due
Ushr (kg) = harvest × r; value = ushr (kg) × price per kg

The gross harvest is used without deducting cultivation costs.

The 10% and 5% rates are from Sahih al-Bukhari 1483 and the five-wasq minimum from Bukhari 1484. The Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980 and the Punjab Zakat and Ushr Act 2018 levy a compulsory state ushr of 5% of produce and exempt produce below five wasqs, stated as 948 kg of wheat or its value. The Hanafi view on no minimum and no cost deduction is quoted from Radd al-Muhtar in a Jamia Banuri Town fatwa.

WORKED EXAMPLE

See it in practice

01 Sample inputs
Harvested produce
2000 kg
Market price per kg
100 Rs per kg
How was the land watered?
Tubewell, well or other watering with cost: 5%
Minimum harvest before ushr applies
948 kg
02 Put values into the formula

2,000 kg ≥ 948 kg minimum; watered by tubewell, r = 5%: 2,000 × 0.05 = 100 kg. Value = 100 × Rs 100 = Rs 10,000.

Interpretation & limitations

How to read your result

Example: 2,000 kg of wheat from tubewell-watered land, with a 948 kg minimum, is above the minimum, so ushr is 2,000 × 5% = 100 kg. At Rs 100 per kg that is Rs 10,000, and 1,900 kg remain. The same harvest from rain-fed land would owe 200 kg, worth Rs 20,000.

Where this estimate stops

The calculator does not decide which crops are subject to ushr, how a tenant's and owner's shares are split, or how to treat mixed irrigation. It does not calculate the state ushr or its exemptions under the Zakat and Ushr laws, and it does not fetch crop prices. Ask the scholar you follow for your case.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

01Is ushr 10% or 5%?

Ten percent where land is watered by rain, springs or natural channels, and five percent where watering needs effort or cost, such as a well or tubewell, according to Sahih al-Bukhari 1483.

02Is there a minimum harvest for ushr?

Sahih al-Bukhari 1484 says no zakat is due on less than five wasqs, and Pakistan's Zakat and Ushr law puts that at 948 kg of wheat. In the Hanafi view there is no minimum, so ushr applies to any amount. Enter the minimum your scholar applies.

03Can I deduct farming costs before ushr?

In the Hanafi view, no: ushr is on the gross harvest, though costs after harvest such as transport and packing may be deducted. Some contemporary scholars allow deducting costs, so ask the scholar you follow.

04Does the government still collect ushr?

Pakistan's Zakat and Ushr laws provide a compulsory 5% ushr assessed on produce, with an exemption by sworn declaration of fiqh. Official collection has been small for many years; your religious obligation is separate from the state levy.

05What is 948 kg?

It is how Pakistan's Zakat and Ushr Ordinance and the Punjab Act state five wasqs of wheat. Other estimates of five wasqs are lower, around 612 to 653 kg.

06Can I pay ushr in cash?

The rate applies to the produce; the calculator also shows its value at your price so you can pay in cash if your scholar permits it.
